In run-away ads, portraits, genre art, advertisements and theft reports, we find handkerchiefs of many descriptions, such as our Red & White "Sprig'd" Handkerchief, worn by women and men for fashion and practicality throughout the 18th and into the 19th centuries.  The pattern of this handkerchief is based on a portrait called by Robert Edge Pine 1766 in the Art Gallery of South Wales.  We developed the pattern by using the portrait as well as our primary research of printed textiles from this time period,
